THE ICE ANGEL
THIS FAIRY TALE HAS EARNED ITS PLACE IN THE HEARTS OF MANY AROUND THE REALM. IT COMES FROM THE ICY LAND OF DRASNIA AND IS A STORY OF SACRIFICE, FAMILY, AND BRAVERY FROM THE MOST UNLIKELY OF HEROES. 351 BB
Long, long ago in the chilling land of Drasnia, there lived a young girl by the name of Elsa Kril. She lived in a small house with her baby sister, Elin, and her mother in a village called Carala. Her father had died months ago in a hunting accident. There were no more than eight or nine families in the village, as many had left the passed winter due to the harsh climate. Elsa was a simple girl. She was sixteen, took care of most of the housework while her mother traded furs with travelers, and cared for her little sister. She was no extraordinary beauty but there was something special about the young Drasnian.
Many times, she had seen things happen before they did. The future would come to her in dreams. She thought the Gods had blessed her with the gift though she didn't dare to tell anyone about it. One night, she had a horrifying dream about a troll that lived up in the mountains. It came down in the middle of the night and killed many of the villagers. She woke up in a cold sweat and instantly got dressed. Snow was falling hard as she made her way outside and up the side of the mountain, toward the cave that she had seen in her dream. Upon reaching it, Elsa took a few steps inside and it didn't take long for her to see the troll. It appeared to be sleeping though before she could get close enough to see, it opened its eyes.
Terrified, she knew she couldn't run. If she ran, she would lead the troll straight down to the village. Most of the men were on a hunting trip and there was nobody to keep it safe. If she stayed, she had a chance at defeating the troll before it could harm her village. And that was the choice she made. The troll lunged at her but Elsa was too quick for him. She darted to the side, finding a pile of rocks and instantly began to hurl them at the troll. Each one hit the troll in the head, her aim being near perfect with each throw. The troll cried out and stumbled, the vibrations from his movements and sounds causing the snow and rocks to begin to fall. Elsa could see the entrance to the cave being covered but she was not finished. With one last rock, she hurled it with all her might. It knocked the troll down, his head making a sickening thud as it hit the ground. Her foe was no more.
With her enemy defeated, Elsa ran for the exit but it was too late. The snow and rocks had already covered her escape. Knowing that the cave was to become her icy tomb, Elsa curled up under a small ledge and went into a peaceful sleep, never to wake again.
But Elsa's story does not end here. It is said that the Gods were so impressed with her bravery that they rewarded her with a spot in their Hall of Heroes, where the souls of the brave reside. To this day, many also claim that her spirit serves as a protector for anyone pure of heart passing through the mountains, being a guardian angel to them during their travels.
